The first thing most players notice in Path of Exile 2's endgame is that it doesn't reward lazy speed-farming the way the old game often did. You can still build something fast, sure, but if your character falls apart the moment a rare monster swings back, the Atlas will expose it pretty quickly. Why melee feels different this time

You stack armour, block, stun control, and endurance-style defenses, then let heavy slams do the talking. It's not always flashy. Ranged builds still punish bad gear
Ranger and Mercenary players get a very different kind of power. They want distance. They want clean angles. They want enemies dead before the fight turns into a brawl. Lightning Arrow, elemental bow skills, grenades, and poison crossbow setups can all clear packs at a lovely pace when the gear is there. The problem is that “when” matters. A weak weapon, poor support links, or missing attack speed can make the whole thing feel awful in higher maps. You'll notice it right away. White mobs die fine, then a chunky rare walks through everything and suddenly your build feels unfinished.
Caster damage is tempting, but risky
Sorceress and Witch builds can look ridiculous in the best way. Freeze chains, shocks, ignites, curses, and big spell combos can lock down entire rooms if you set them up well. But casters don't forgive sloppy play. You're often managing mana, spacing, cooldowns, and dodge timing at the same time. Miss one boss slam or roll into the wrong puddle and that huge damage number won't save you. That's why many experienced players build in extra safety, even if it costs some damage. Energy shield recovery, chill effects, minion distractions, or curse control can turn a fragile caster into something far more reliable.
Builds that last are built in layers
Minion builds are still a strong option for players who like controlling the fight from behind the line. They're not completely hands-off, though. If your minions can't survive map pressure, you'll spend more time resummoning than killing. The better approach is to treat every build as a machine with several working parts: clear speed, boss damage, recovery, mitigation, and panic buttons. Even trading for a key item like Fate of the Vaal HC Divine Orb only helps if the rest of the character makes sense. The best endgame setups aren't the ones with the loudest tooltip; they're the ones that keep working when the screen gets ugly.
