The Maple Leafs once again enter the NHL season with high expectations and tons of pre sure from the organization and fan base to perform well. No one knows that better than general manager, Kyle Dubas. The Toronto GM heads into the 2022-23 season with just one year left on his contract with the organization. While the team has been extremely succe sful in the regular season under Dubas, the Buds have not won a single playoff round during his time. It's safe to say that Dubas is on the hot seat. With Maple Leafs training camp getting underway this week, Dubas spoke with the media about his contract situation, stating that he's OK going into Mallex Smith Jersey the year without a new deal in place and willing to bet on the team. On paper, the team should be good enough that it's an easy decision to bring Dubas back. Toronto is bringing back most of the roster that it had last season, with a core group of Auston Matthews, Mitch Marner, John Tavares, Morgan Reilly and William Nylander in place. The Maple Leafs let Jack Campbell walk in free agency and traded away Petr Mrazek. In their places are Matt Murray, who was acquired from the Senators, and Ilya Samsonov, who was signed as a free agent after not receiving a qualifying offer from the Capitals. Dubas mentioned that Brendan Shanahan, president of the Maple Leafs, told him that no extension was coming at this point in time. It was a decision that Dubas claims he is comfortable with and is willing to be judged after the season. More importantly, the GM insisted that the i sue of his contract would not be an obstruction to the team and its focus. "I know it won't be a distraction because I won't let it be a distraction." The Maple Leafs have not won a playoff series since 2004, and are in the midst of the longest Cup drought in the NHL, with their last Stanley Cup win coming in 1967. If the Maple Leafs were to make a deep postseason run, it is likely that a new contract will be worked out for Dubas in the offseason. However, if the Maple Leafs fail yet again to get the playoff monkey off their backs, that is likely the end of the road in Toronto for Dubas, and potentially others like head coach Sheldon Keefe.
